## Conferencing or Streaming - What's the Difference?

Audio/Video Conferencing refers to two-way audio and audio/video communication, where users in diverse locations can speak and interact with each other, just like a phone conversation but also with video.  At NNU, the use of high-end Polycom, Cisco, and Blue Jeans Carts provide several useful features, including:

- Remote users can control what they see by tilting, panning, and zooming the camera on the Polycoms and Ciscos.
- Computer-based content (such as PowerPoint presentations) can be sent to or received from remote viewers.

## Requesting an Audio/Video Conference:

Please [submit your request](https://nnuhelp.sherpadesk.com) for audio/video conferencing via the ticket system as early as possible to ensure the availability of resources and Internet connections for your reserved building and room.  A timely request will also help ITS schedule personnel for your conference.

## Testing the Connection:

To ensure time to resolve any issues, you must schedule a specific date when the *'far client(s)' *(the people on the other, remote end of the connection) will be available for testing the audio/video conferencing connection, as follows:

- For CLASSES:  Contact ITS at least one week before the class/event and one day before the class/event.
- ITS will contact the remote client for a specific time on your set date.

**Note:** ** **After your remote and local connections have been tested, your audio/video conference will be set up 15-30 minutes before the class/event.

## Camera Operator:

The ITS recommends that each audio/video class have a camera operator during the audio/video conference.  Your department will need to provide someone who will be trained by the ITS for audio/video conferencing camera operation.  The ITS can provide a technician if one is available.

For instructor or camera operator orientation, please contact ITS at 208-467-8111.

If more complex video and/or audio are required, you may contact IT Services at 208-467-8111, where your group or department may rent the equipment.  If onsite operators are needed for the event for audio/video, the group or department may contact Conference and Events (ext. 8790) to arrange personnel for this function.  The cost of personnel from Conference and Events will be the responsibility of the group or department.

## Simple or Complex Setup:

A simple audio/video setup would be a presentation where a single microphone and camera remain in a single fixed position.  Typically, this means that any speaking is done from only one position, either sitting or standing, such as at a table or podium, and no content needs to be displayed to the remote viewers (such as PowerPoint or other visual aids).

A more complex setup might be where multiple speakers need to interact and/or where the speaker desires audience participation, and the remote viewers need to feel they are “part of the action."  Another situation would be where the speaker moves around and possibly uses visual aids and audio aids for their presentation.  This would necessitate more than one microphone, a sound mixer board, and possibly more than one camera, as well as operators for the cameras and soundboard.

## Reserving a Room:

Please note ITS DOES NOT RESERVE ROOMS on NNU’s campus or in distant locations for your audio/video conferences.  You must reserve your own rooms and make all initial contacts with the appropriate persons at the remote location, and provide ITS with contact information via the [ticket system](https://nnuhelp.sherpadesk.com).
